The Company Behind The Austonian: Grupo Villar Mir

Grupo Villar Mir (GVM) is Spain’s largest family-owned industrial group with presence in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America and North America. Valued at $7.6 billion, GVM has established an international reputation for its global business ventures and world-class real estate projects.

Through its wholly-owned Austin-based subsidiary Benchmark Development, GVM has been building communities in Central Texas for nearly two decades. The Austonian is the realization of Benchmark’s long-term vision to create an iconic residential property along Congress Avenue, several blocks south of the Texas State Capitol.

Other GVM real estate projects include the iconic Pei Cobb Freed and Partners-designed Torre Espacio in Madrid, Spain. The structure is a 775-foot tower of sculpted glass and represents some of the most progressive commercial architecture in Western Europe. The level of engineering on the spiraling tower is so complex that it was featured on the Discovery Channel’s “Extreme Engineering” in 2006.

In Mexico, GVM developed Mayakoba, a grouping of four luxury hotels situated around a world-class golf course in the beautiful Yucatan Peninsula. Each hotel is arranged in a village setting around the area’s freshwater lagoons and beaches. In 2008 Mayakoba’s golf course hosted the first tournament in Mexico in the history of the PGA TOUR.
