With the economy on the upswing, the Wall Street Journal asked experts to forecast the ten best cities for highly mobile and educated people. According to an expert panel of demographers, economists, geographers, and authors, Austin ranks fifth on the list, based on criteria including economic diversity and the lifestyle that the city offers.
Austin is an arts and technology magnet. It is home to strong high-tech, video game, and renewable energy sectors and the University of Texas at Austin, one of the largest public universities in the United States. Annual events such as the Austin City Limits Music Festival and SXSW Music-Film-Interactive Festival and Conference make the city a gathering place for hip and educated young adults.
As Austin grows, so does demand for an urban lifestyle that is less dependent on cars and has a stronger tie to the heart of the city. Over the past several years, Austin’s downtown has developed into a 24-hour urban scene with jobs, places to live and places to go out within walking distance of each other.
