Due to the drought, the Annual Symphony and Fireworks at Auditorium Shores has been cancelled. That said, there’s still plenty to do in downtown Austin to celebrate this year’s Independence Day weekend. The Downtown Austin Alliance put together the following list of family-friendly weekend events:
The Paramount Theatre’s Summer Classic Film Series is continuing through July and offers a weekend of classic films. Beat the heat and spend the weekend watching classics like “The Leopard.”
The Scottish Rite Children’s Theatre invites the little ones out for Peter Pan. Participate in this interactive production while children help Peter defeat Neverland’s Captain Hook.
The Dinner Detective is running a special Independence Day weekend presentation of the “Give Me Liberty or Death” show.
Adventurous types can also enjoy a picnic at Zilker Park after a day of canoeing or kayaking on Lady Bird Lake.
The Austonian luxury high-rise condos in downtown Austin are located within walking distance of downtown attractions including Arthouse, The Paramount Theater and the Texas State Capitol.

The Austonian Club is a private club where homeowners can host meetings, parties and events.
Located on the 55th floor of The Austonian luxury high-rise building in downtown Austin, the 6,000-square-foot club has 360-degree views of downtown Austin and the surrounding Texas Hill Country. Two observation decks are located on the north and south ends of the facility. The private club is one of a kind, as it is located in the crown of The Austonian, which is the tallest building in Austin and the tallest residential building West of the Mississippi.
With a configuration that supports everything from intimate dinners for 16 to large events for 250, the club has a lounge, dining area and large event room. All of the aforementioned spaces may be configured to support a large event.
An on-staff event planner that is a member of The Austonian concierge team is available to plan events at the club.
To date, the club has been used for events including fundraisers for nonprofit organizations, a sleepover for a young homeowner and friends, a wedding and a high school prom.

Austin celebrates the 9th annual Keep Austin Weird Fest & 5K this Saturday, June 25. The wacky festival includes psychedelic music, local artisans and a 5K race through downtown with fun stops along the way (including Amy’s Ice Cream). Participants are encouraged to wear their wackiest and weirdest costumes for the “slowest 5K you’ll ever run.”
Keep Austin Weird Fest kicks off with live musical performances by The Daze at 2 p.m., followed by performances from Lost July, Ben Baxter, Suite 709, DEADMAN, and headliner, Alpha Rev.
The race begins at 7 p.m. at The Long Center.
The event benefits Austin Parks Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to building partnerships, advocacy and action for parks.

Every Thursday evening this summer, Austin-based composer Erik Johnston will play the piano at Caffé Medici, the downtown coffee shop in the base of The Austonian condo tower. The music will begin around 7 p.m.
The Caffé Medici shop at The Austonian is the third storefront of the locally-owned company. Showcasing the art of the barista, The Austonian location features a freestanding espresso bar.

Berry Austin, the specialty frozen yogurt shop located in the retail level of The Austonian recently won Runner up for Best Frozen Yogurt in The Austin Chronicle 2011 Restaurant Poll.
Berry Austin features ten rotating flavors of soft serve frozen yogurt as well as non-dairy sorbet. Additional menu items offered at BerryAustin2Go include floats, fresh yogurt parfaits, smoothies, coffee and an assortment of frozen drinks.

The 7th annual Maudie’s Tex Mex Moonlight Margarita Run takes place tonight at 8 p.m. The race, which begins underneath Mopac at the rock, is a 5K followed by an after party featuring fajitas and margaritas at American Legion Hall.
Proceeds from the run benefit The Trail Foundation and the projects the organization does around the trail.
